## Principal and interest
When you take out a loan, your repayments are broken up into two parts — principal and interest. The principal is the original amount you borrow, while interest is the cost of borrowing the money.

Both are clearly stated on your loan terms and condition, and may just be the most important aspect. This is because whatever principal and interest rate are written on your loan terms and conditions, that’s what will be accepted during the loan transactions. Read the fine print to avoid stories of “I didn’t know”.

## Repayment terms
The loan terms and conditions also contain your repayment terms which are how long the loan is going to last and the repayment schedule.

This helps you get an idea of how you can make a budget that contains debt settlement. It also states how long you can go without paying your loan before you fall into default.

## Processing fee
The processing fee for a loan is a fixed non-refundable fee associated with the loan that helps the lender cover costs and the risk of approving the loan, as well as any fraudulent transactions that may occur.

This helps give you an idea of why you may not get the complete loan amount (for instance you getting credited with #49,000 instead of #50,000 when you apply for that amount). All these extra fees are always stated in a typical loan T&C.

## Loan purpose
When you are asked about the purpose of your loan, you believe the lender is asking because they want to know if that amount is worth it.

While this is true, the lender also takes a record of the purpose of the loan and builds restrictions based on the purpose given for the loan (this entails how you can and cannot spend your loan). Although this varies from lender to lender and also depends on what kind of loan you apply for.

## Collateral
The collateral chosen for the loan is placed in the terms and conditions for the benefit of both parties.

After the loan transaction is finalized, at no instance can the lender claim something else as collateral. But if the borrower is unaware of the full details of the collateral, he/she can fall prey to an unethical lender who may take advantage of his/her naivety. Read your terms and conditions o!

## Income stability status
Your creditworthiness and proof of your employment status or stable source of income are also included in your terms and conditions.

This is to show that the borrower was proven creditworthy of the loan that they applied for and that they could afford to live suitably even in the event of loan repayment.

## Third parties
This is any co-signer or guarantor to the loan. It shows proof that another individual served as a witness for the loan or that they’ve been tasked with the repayment of a loan in case the original borrower defaults and that they did so willingly and not under duress.

## Lender’s right in case of default
This includes all that the lender can legally do if the borrower defaults on the loan or makes late payments.

These rights most times include the collateral being seized by the lender, the lender’s right to sue the borrower, the lender’s right to issue penalty charges for any late payments made etc.

## Loan term renegotiation
This has to do with any provisions made for modifying the loan terms in the event that the borrower can’t meet up with loan repayments or could not afford loan repayments for any specific reason.

This will state if the lender is open to renegotiation and under what terms this renegotiation will occur.

## Legal justice
This is the governing law and jurisdiction for any dispute related to the loan. It states if a defaulter will be taken to the supreme court of law or any minor court of law to settle any dispute related to the loan, or if the defaulter will be charged with a fine.

## Blacklist (Bonus)
This states the governing bodies responsible for blacklisting loan defaulters, it gives you an idea of who you will be reported to when you default on a loan (it’ll also help you know who to go to when you get blacklisted). ## A credit score is not a credit report
A credit report is a detailed record of an individual’s credit history and it contains a wide range of information about you and your accounts which include but are not limited to personal information, loans/debts, and payment history. While, a credit score, on the other hand, is a graded numerical summary of the information above that determines an individual’s creditworthiness. A credit score’s rating changes based on the information added to the credit report.

## A credit score is not permanent
A credit score can change over time, it’s not permanent or static. Depending on an individual’s credit history and credit management habits, the credit score can either rise or fall. You can prevent a credit score fall and improve the chances of a climb by; quick repayment of debts, frequent small loans etc.

Although, you should know that if an individual doesn’t take on any more loans, their credit score will remain static right where it is. As we mentioned earlier, the rise or fall of your credit score is fully dependent on how you manage your debts. Clear up all pending debts if there are any and watch your credit score gain back its life.

## Paying off debt might not improve your credit score immediately
We know that you have been told that paying your debts on time can help you improve your credit score, but this doesn’t always happen immediately. It takes some time for the credit bureau to update your credit report and as such, some debt may reflect on your report for a long time.

This doesn’t mean that your credit score will be graded incorrectly, only that it will remain as it was until your credit report has been updated by the bureau. This is why we advise that you avoid the pit of bad credit scores, the woes far outweigh the pros.

## Having a high income does not guarantee a good credit score
Here’s another important fact to know about credit scores — your income has absolutely nothing to do with your credit score. A credit score can only be affected by an individual’s credit history.

Repaying debts on time or at the due date is a good way to get a good credit score. The idea that wealthy people have better credit scores than the average earner is false. ## Not having a credit history can also negatively impact one’s credit score
Individuals who have no credit history, have no credit record and as such, have no credit score. This makes it hard for lenders to determine if they are trustworthy.

## Here’s a brief recap on the student loan act 
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the Access to Higher Education Act 2023 into law on Monday, June 12, which was a significant decision. He fulfilled his promise by starting a test student loan program. The program aims to help more people access education, regardless of their background.

The “Student Loan Act” aims to provide Nigerian students in college with interest-free loans. Additionally, the Act establishes an Education Loan Fund, designed to assist Nigerians in funding their higher education interests.

On June 14, 2023, the government promised to prepare for the student loan program to start between September and October 2023. Since the announcement, there has been no updates or progress on the scheme.

## Here comes the good news  
Many Nigerians are skeptical about the bill’s implementation, given the government’s history of poor follow-through. This skepticism is understandable. President Tinubu announced that the government will start giving student loans to Nigerians in January 2024.

At a summit in Abuja, the President announced plans to expand the student loan program to help Nigerians, easing their difficulties and reaffirming his commitment to this goal.

David Adejo, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, confirmed that the Nigerian government will begin offering student loans in the 2023/2024 school year. This announcement was made during a meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Student Loans.
